ButUngolianthadgrowngreat,andhelessbythepowerthathadgoneoutofhim;andsheroseagainsthim,andhercloudclosedabouthim,andsheenmeshedhiminawebofclingingthongstostranglehim.ThenMorgothsentforthaterriblecry,thatechoedinthemountains.ThereforethatregionwascalledLammoth;fortheechoesofhisvoicedweltthereeverafter,sothatanywhocriedaloudinthatlandawokethem,andallthewastebetweenthehillsandtheseawasfilledwithaclamourasofvoicesinanguish.ThecryofMorgothinthathourwasthegreatestandmostdreadfulthatwaseverheardinthenorthernworld;themountainsshook,andtheearthtrembled,androckswererivenasunder.Deepinforgottenplacesthatcrywasheard.FarbeneaththerainedhallsofAngband,invaultstowhichtheValarinthehasteoftheirassaulthadnotdescended,Balrogslurkedstill,awaitingeverthereturnoftheirLord;andnowswiftlytheyarose,andpassingoverHithlumtheycametoLammothasatempestoffire.WiththeirwhipsofflametheysmoteasunderthewebsofUngoliant,andshequailed,andturnedtoflight,belchingblackvapourstocoverher;andfleeingfromthenorthshewentdownintoBeleriand,anddweltbeneathEredGorgoroth,inthatdarkvalleythatwasaftercalledNanDungortheb,theValleyofDreadfulDeath,becauseofthehorrorthatshebredthere.ForotherfoulcreaturesofspiderformhaddwelttheresincethedaysofthedelvingofAngband,andshematedwiththem,anddevouredthem;andevenafterUngoliantherselfdeparted,andwentwhithershewouldintotheforgottensouthoftheworld,heroffspringabodethereandwovetheirhideouswebs.OfthefateofUngoliantnotaletells.Yetsomehavesaidthatsheendedlongago,wheninheruttermostfamineshedevouredherselfatlast.
AndthusthefearofYavannathattheSilmarilswouldbeswallowedupandfallintonothingnessdidnotcometopass;buttheyremainedinthepowerofMorgoth.Andhebeingfreedgatheredagainallhisservantsthathecouldfind,andcametotheruinsofAngband.
