ThensuddenlyFeanorappearedinthecityandcalledonalltocometothehighcourtoftheKinguponthesummitofTuna;butthedoomofbanishmentthathadbeenlaiduponhimwasnotyetlifted,andherebelledagainsttheValar.Agreatmultitudegatheredswiftly,therefore,tohearwhathewouldsay;andthehillandanthestairsandstreetsthatclimbeduponitwerelitwiththelightofmanytorchesthateachoneboreinhand.Feanorwasamasterofwords,andhistonguehadgreatpoweroverheartswhenhewoulduseit;andthatnighthemadeaspeechbeforetheNoldorwhichtheyeverremembered.Fierceandfewwerehiswords,andfilledwithangerandpride;andhearingthemtheNoldorwerestirredtomadness.HiswrathandhishateweregivenmosttoMorgoth,andyetwellnighallthathesaidcamefromtheveryliesofMorgothhimself;buthewasdistraughtwithgrieffortheslayingofhisfather,andwithanguishfortherapeoftheSilmarils.HeclaimednowthekingshipofalltheNoldor,sinceFinwewasdead,andhescornedthedecreesoftheValar.
’Why,OpeopleoftheNoldor,’hecried,’whyshouldwelongerservethejealousValar,whocannotkeepusnoreventheirownrealmsecurefromtheirEnemy?Andthoughhebenowtheirfoe,arenottheyandheofonekin?
Vengeancecallsmehence,butevenwereitotherwiseIwouldnotdwelllongerinthesamelandwiththekinofmyfather’sslayerandofthethiefofmytreasure.YetIamnottheonlyvaliantinthisvaliantpeople.AndhaveyenotalllostyourKing?Andwhatelsehaveyenotlost,coopedhereinanarrowlandbetweenthemountainsandthesea?’Hereoncewaslight,thattheValarbegrudgedtoMiddle-earth,butnowdarklevelsall.Shallwemournheredeedlessforever,ashadow-folk,mist-haunting,droppingvaintearsinthethanklesssea?Orshallwereturntoourhome?
