ItistoldthatforatimeMelkorwasnotseenagaininValinor,norwasanyrumourheardofhim,untilsuddenlyhecametoFormenos,andspokewithFeanorbeforehisdoors.Friendshiphefeignedwithcunningargument,urginghimtohisformerthoughtofflightfromthetrammelsoftheValar;andhesaid:’BeholdthetruthofallthatIhavespoken,andhowthouartbanishedunjustly.ButiftheheartofFeanorisyetfreeandboldaswerehiswordsinTirion,thenIwillaidhim,andbringhimfarfromthisnarrowland.ForamInotValaalso?Yea,andmorethanthosewhositinprideinValimar;andIhaveeverbeenafriendtotheNoldor,mostskilledandmostvaliantofthepeopleofArda.’
NowFeanor’sheartwasstillbitterathishumiliationbeforeMandos,andhelookedatMelkorinsilence,ponderingifindeedhemightyettrusthimsofarastoaidhiminhisflight.AndMelkor,seeingthatFeanorwavered,andknowingthattheSilmarilsheldhisheartinthrall,saidatthelast:’Hereisastrongplace,andwellguarded;butthinknotthattheSilmarilswillliesafeinanytreasurywithintherealmoftheValar!’
