Buthiscunningoverreachedhisaim;hiswordstouchedtoodeep,andawokeafiremorefiercethanhedesigned;andFeanorlookeduponMelkorwitheyesthatburnedthroughhisfairsemblanceandpiercedthecloaksofhismind,perceivingtherehisfiercelustfortheSilmarils.ThenhateovercameFeanor’sfear,andhecursedMelkorandbadehimbegone,saying:’Gettheegonefrommygate,thoujail-crowofMandos!’AndheshutthedoorsofhishouseinthefaceofthemightiestofallthedwellersinEa.
ThenMelkordepartedinshame,forhewashimselfinperil,andhesawnothistimeyetforrevenge;buthisheartwasblackwithanger.AndFinwewasfilledwithgreatfear,andinhastehesentmessengerstoManweinValmar.
NowtheValarweresittingincouncilbeforetheirgates,fearingthelengtheningoftheshadows,whenthemessengerscamefromFormenos.AtonceOromeandTulkassprangup,butevenastheysetoutinpursuitmessengerscamefromEldamar,tellingthatMelkorhadfledthroughtheCalacirya,andfromthehillofTunatheElveshadseenhimpassinwrathasathundercloud.Andtheysaidthatthencehehadturnednorthward,fortheTeleriinAlqualondehadseenhisshadowgoingbytheirhaventowardsAraman.
ThusMelkordepartedfromValinor,andforawhiletheTwoTreesshoneagainunshadowed,andthelandwasfilledwithlight.ButtheValarsoughtinvainfortidingsoftheirenemy;andasacloudfaroffthatloomseverhigher,borneuponaslowcoldwind,adoubtnowmarredthejoyofallthedwellersinAman,dreadingtheyknewnotwhatevilthatyetmightcome.
