AndManwewasgrieved,buthewatchedandsaidnoword.TheValarhadbroughttheEldartotheirlandfreely,todwellortodepart;andthoughtheymightjudgedeparturetobefolly,theymightnotrestrainthemfromit.ButnowthedeedsofFeanorcouldnotbepassedover,andtheValarwereangeredanddismayed;andhewassummonedtoappearbeforethematthegatesofValmar,toanswerforallhiswordsanddeeds.Therealsoweresummonedallotherswhohadanypartinthismatter,oranyknowledgeofit;andFeanorstandingbeforeMandosintheRingofDoomwascommandedtoanswerallthatwasaskedofhim.Thenatlasttherootwaslaidbare,andthemaliceofMelkorrevealed;andstraightwayTulkasleftthecounciltolayhandsuponhimandbringhimagaintojudgement.ButFeanorwasnotheldguiltless,forheitwasthathadbrokenthepeaceofValinoranddrawnhissworduponhiskinsman;andMandossaidtohim:’Thouspeakestofthraldom.Ifthraldomitbe,thoucanstnotescapeit;forManweisKingofArda,andnotofAmanonly.Andthisdeedwasunlawful,whetherinAmanornotinAman.Thereforethisdoomisnowmade:fortwelveyearsthoushallleaveTirionwherethisthreatwasuttered.Inthattimetakecounselwiththyself,andrememberwhoandwhatthouart.Butafterthattimethismattershallbesetinpeaceandheldredressed,ifotherswillreleasethee.’
ThenFingolfinsaid:’Iwillreleasemybrother.’ButFeanorspokenowordinanswer,standingsilentbeforetheValar.Thenheturnedandleftthecouncil,anddepartedfromValmar.
Withhimintobanishmentwenthissevensons,andnorthwardinValinortheymadeastrongplaceandtreasuryinthehills;andthereatFormenosamultitudeofgemswerelaidinhoard,andweaponsalso,andtheSilmarilswereshutinachamberofiron.ThitheralsocameFinwetheKing,becauseofthelovethatheboretoFeanor;andFingolfinruledtheNoldorinTirion.
