Shieldsalsotheymadedisplayingthetokensofmanyhousesandkindredsthatviedonewithanother;andtheseonlytheyworeabroad,andofotherweaponstheydidnotspeak,foreachbelievedthathealonehadreceivedthewarning.
AndFeanormadeasecretforge,ofwhichnotevenMelkorwasaware;andtherehetemperedfellswordsforhimselfandforhissons,andmadetallhelmswithplumesofred.BitterlydidMahtanruethedaywhenhetaughttothehusbandofNerdanelalltheloreofmetalworkthathehadlearnedofAule.
ThuswithliesandevilwhisperingsandfalsecounselMelkorkindledtheheartsoftheNoldortostrife;andoftheirquarrelscameatlengththeendofthehighdaysofValinorandtheeveningofitsancientglory.ForFeanornowbeganopenlytospeakwordsofrebellionagainsttheValar,cryingaloudthathewoulddepartfromValinorbacktotheworldwithout,andwoulddelivertheNoldorfromthraldom,iftheywouldfollowhim.
ThentherewasgreatunrestinTirion,andFinwewastroubled;andhesummonedallhislordstocouncil.
