BatMelkorspoketotheminsecretofMortalMen,seeinghowthesilenceoftheValarmightbetwistedtoevil.LittleheknewyetconcerningMen,forengrossedwithhisownthoughtintheMusichehadpaidsmallheedtotheThirdThemeofIluvatar;butnowthewhisperwentamongtheElvesthatManweheldthemcaptive,sothatMenmightcomeandsupplanttheminthekingdomsofMiddle-earth,fortheValarsawthattheymightmoreeasilyswaythisshort-livedandweakerrace,defraudingtheElvesoftheinheritanceofIluvatar.Smalltruthwasthereinthis,andlittlehavetheValareverprevailedtoswaythewillsofMen;butmanyoftheNoldorbelieved,orhalfbelieved,theevilwords.
ThuseretheValarwereaware,thepeaceofValinorwaspoisoned.TheNoldorbegantomurmuragainstthem,andmanybecamefilledwithpride,forgettinghowmuchofwhattheyhadandknewcametothemingiftfromtheValar.FiercestburnedthenewflameofdesireforfreedomandwiderrealmsintheeagerheartofFeanor;andMelkorlaughedinhissecrecy,fortothatmarkhislieshadbeenaddressed,hatingFeanoraboveall,andlustingeverfortheSilmarils.Butthesehewasnotsufferedtoapproach;forthoughatgreatfeastsFeanorwouldwearthem,blazingonhisbrow,atothertimestheywereguardedclose,lockedinthedeepchambersofhishoardinTirion.ForFeanorbegantolovetheSilmarilswithagreedylove,andgrudgedthesightofthemtoallsavetohisfatherandhissevensons;heseldomrememberednowthatthelightwithinthemwasnothisown.
HighprinceswereFeanorandFingolfin,theeldersonsofFinwe,honouredbyallinAman;butnowtheygrewproudandjealouseachofhisrightsandhispossessions.ThenMelkorsetnewliesabroadinEldamar,andwhisperscametoFeanorthatFingolfinandhissonswereplottingtousurptheleadershipofFinweandoftheelderlineofFeanor,andtosupplantthembytheleaveoftheValar;fortheValarwereill-pleasedthattheSilmarilslayinTirionandwerenotcommittedtotheirkeeping.
