Fromthattimeforth,inflamedbythisdesire,hesoughtevermoreeagerlyhowheshoulddestroyFeanorandendthefriendshipoftheValarandtheElves;buthedissembledhispurposeswithcunning,andnothingofhismalicecouldyetbeseeninthesemblancethathewore.Longwasheatwork,andslowatfirstandbarrenwashislabour.Buthethatsowsliesintheendshallnotlackofaharvest,andsoonhemayrestfromtoilindeedwhileothersreapandsowinhisstead.EverMelkorfoundsomeearsthatwouldheedhim,andsometonguesthatwouldenlargewhattheyhadheard;andhisliespassedfromfriendtofriend,assecretsofwhichtheknowledgeprovesthetellerwise.BitterlydidtheNoldoratoneforthefollyoftheiropenearsinthedaysthatfollowedafter.
Whenhesawthatmanyleanedtowardshim,Melkorwouldoftenwalkamongthem,andamidhisfairwordsotherswerewoven,sosubtlythatmanywhoheardthembelievedinrecollectionthattheyarosefromtheirownthought.Visionshewouldconjureintheirheartsofthemightyrealmsthattheycouldhaveruledattheirownwill,inpowerandfreedomintheEast;andthenwhisperswentabroadthattheValarhadbroughttheEldartoAmanbecauseoftheirjealousy,fearingthatthebeautyoftheQuendiandthemakers’powerthatIluvatarhadbequeathedtothemwouldgrowtoogreatfortheValartogovern,astheElveswaxedandspreadoverthewidelandsoftheworld.
Inthosedays,moreover,thoughtheValarknewindeedofthecomingofMenthatweretobe,theElvesasyetknewnaughtofit;forManwehadnotrevealedittothem.
