ButIsildurwasoverwhelmedbyahostofOrcsthatlayinwaitintheMistyMountains;andtheydescendeduponhimatunawaresinhiscampbetweentheGreenwoodandtheGreatRiver,nightoLoegNingloron,theGladdenFields,forhewasheedlessandsetnoguard,deemingthatallhisfoeswereoverthrown.Therewellnighallhispeoplewereslain,andamongthemwerehisthreeeldersons,Elendur,Aratan,andCiryon;buthiswifeandhisyoungestson,Valandil,hehadleftinImladriswhenhewenttothewar.IsildurhimselfescapedbymeansoftheRing,forwhenheworeithewasinvisibletoalleyes;buttheOrcshuntedhimbyscentandslot,untilhecametotheRiverandplungedin.TheretheRingbetrayedhimandavengeditsmaker,foritslippedfromhisfingerasheswam,anditwaslostinthewater.ThentheOrcssawhimashelabouredinthestream,andtheyshothimwithmanyarrows,andthatwashisend.
Onlythreeofhispeoplecameeverbackoverthemountainsafterlongwandering;andoftheseonewasOhtarhisesquire,towhosekeepinghehadgiventheshardsoftheswordofElendil.
ThusNarsilcameinduetimetothehandofValandil,Isildur’sheir,inImladris;butthebladewasbrokenanditslightwasextinguished,anditwasnotforgedanew.AndMasterElrondforetoldthatthiswouldnotbedoneuntiltheRulingRingshouldbefoundagainandSauronshouldreturn;butthehopeofElvesandMenwasthatthesethingsmightnevercometopass.
