ManyoftheElvesandmanyoftheNumenoreansandofMenwhoweretheirallieshadperishedintheBattleandtheSiege;andElendiltheTallandGil-galadtheHighKingwerenomore.
Neveragainwassuchahostassembled,norwasthereanysuchleagueofElvesandMen;forafterElendil’sdaythetwokindredsbecameestranged.
TheRulingRingpassedoutoftheknowledgeevenoftheWiseinthatage;yetitwasnotunmade.ForIsildurwouldnotsurrenderittoElrondandCirdanwhostoodby.TheycounselledhimtocastitintothefireofOrodruinnighathand,inwhichithadbeenforged,sothatitshouldperish,andthepowerofSauronbeforeverdiminished,andheshouldremainonlyasashadowofmaliceinthewilderness.ButIsildurrefusedthiscounsel,saying:’ThisIwillhaveaswere-gildformyfather’sdeath,andmybrothers.WasitnotIthatdealttheEnemyhisdeath-blow?’AndtheRingthatheheldseemedtohimexceedinglyfairtolookon;andhewouldnotsufferittobedestroyed.TakingitthereforehereturnedatfirsttoMinasAnor,andthereplantedtheWhiteTreeinmemoryofhisbrotherAnarion.Butsoonhedeparted,andafterhehadgivencounseltoMeneldil,hisbrother’sson,andhadcommittedtohimtherealmofthesouth,heboreawaytheRing,tobeanheirloomofhishouse,andmarchednorthfromGondorbythewaythatElendilhadcome;andheforsooktheSouthKingdom,forhepurposedtotakeuphisfather’srealminEriador,farfromtheshadowoftheBlackLand.
