ValandiltookuphisabodeinAnnuminas,buthisfolkwerediminished,andoftheNumenoreansandoftheMenofEriadorthereremainednowtoofewtopeoplethelandortomaintainalltheplacesthatElendilhadbuilt;inDagorlad,andinMordor,andupontheGladdenFieldsmanyhadfallen.AnditcametopassafterthedaysofEarendur,theseventhkingthatfollowedValandil,thattheMenofWesternesse,theDunedainoftheNorth,becamedividedintopettyrealmsandlordships,andtheirfoesdevouredthemonebyone.Evertheydwindledwiththeyears,untiltheirglorypassed,leavingonlygreenmoundsinthegrass.Atlengthnaughtwasleftofthembutastrangepeoplewanderingsecretlyinthewild,andothermenknewnottheirhomesnorthepurposeoftheirjourneys,andsaveinImladris,inthehouseofElrond,theirancestrywasforgotten.YettheshardsoftheswordwerecherishedduringmanylivesofMenbytheheirsofIsildur;andtheirline,fromfathertoson,remainedunbroken.
InthesouththerealmofGondorendured,andforatimeitssplendourgrew,untilitrecalledthewealthandmajestyofNumenorereitfellHightowersthepeopleofGondorbuilt,andstrongplaces,andhavensofmanyships;andtheWingedCrownoftheKingsofMenwasheldinawebypeopleofmanylandsandtongues.
