Thereforemanyofthosewhosailedeastinthattimeandmadefortressesanddwellingsuponthecoastswerealreadybenttohiswill,andtheyservedhimstillgladlyinMiddle-earth.ButbecauseofthepowerofGil-galadtheserenegades,lordsbothmightyandevil,forthemostparttookuptheirabodesinthesouthlandsfaraway;yettwotherewere,HerumorandFuinur,whorosetopoweramongtheHaradrim,agreatandcruelpeoplethatdweltinthewidelandssouthofMordorbeyondthemouthsofAnduin.
WhenthereforeSauronsawhistimehecamewithgreatforceagainstthenewrealmofGondor,andhetookMinasIthil,andhedestroyedtheWhiteTreeofIsildurthatgrewthere.ButIsildurescaped,andtakingwithhimaseedlingoftheTreehewentwithhiswifeandhissonsbyshipdowntheRiver,andtheysailedfromthemouthsofAnduinseekingElendil.MeanwhileAnarionheldOsgiliathagainsttheEnemy,andforthattimedrovehimbacktothemountains;butSaurongatheredhisstrengthagain,andAnarionknewthatunlesshelpshouldcomehiskingdomwouldnotlongstand.
NowElendilandGil-galadtookcounseltogether,fortheyperceivedthatSauronwouldgrowtoostrongandwouldovercomeallhisenemiesonebyone,iftheydidnotuniteagainsthim.ThereforetheymadethatLeaguewhichiscalledtheLastAlliance,andtheymarchedeastintoMiddle-earthgatheringagreathostofElvesandMen;andtheyhaltedforawhileatImladris.
