ThustheExilesofNumenorestablishedtheirrealmsinArnorandinGondor;buteremanyyearshadpasseditbecamemanifestthattheirenemy,Sauron,hadalsoreturned.Hecameinsecret,ashasbeentold,tohisancientkingdomofMordorbeyondtheEphelDuath,theMountainsofShadow,andthatcountrymarchedwithGondorupontheeast.ThereabovethevalleyofGorgorothwasbuilthisfortressvastandstrong,Barad-dur,theDarkTower;andtherewasafierymountaininthatlandthattheElvesnamedOrodruin.IndeedforthatreasonSauronhadsettherehisdwellinglongbefore,forheusedthefirethatwelledtherefromtheheartoftheearthinhissorceriesandinhisforging;andinthemidstoftheLandofMordorhehadfashionedtheRulingRing.Therenowhebroodedinthedark,untilhehadwroughtforhimselfanewshape;anditwasterrible,forhisfairsemblancehaddepartedforeverwhenhewascastintotheabyssatthedrowningofNumenor.HetookupagainthegreatRingandclothedhimselfinpower;andthemaliceoftheEyeofSauronfewevenofthegreatamongElvesandMencouldendure.
NowSauronpreparedwaragainsttheEldarandtheMenofWesternesse,andthefiresoftheMountainwerewakenedagain.WhereforeseeingthesmokeofOrodruinfromafar,andperceivingthatSauronhadreturned,theNumenoreansnamedthatmountainanewAmonAmarth,whichisMountDoom.AndSaurongatheredtohimgreatstrengthofhisservantsoutoftheeastandthesouth;andamongthemwerenotafewofthehighraceofNumenor.
