FromImladristheycrossedtheMistyMountainsbymanypassesandmarcheddowntheRiverAnduin,andsocameatlastuponthehostofSaurononDagorlad,theBattlePlain,whichliesbeforethegateoftheBlackLand.Alllivingthingsweredividedinthatday,andsomeofeverykind,evenofbeastsandbirds,werefoundineitherhost,savetheElvesonly.TheyalonewereundividedandfollowedGil-galad.OftheDwarvesfewfoughtuponeitherside;butthekindredofDurinofMoriafoughtagainstSauron.
ThehostofGil-galadandElendilhadthevictory,forthemightoftheElveswasstillgreatinthosedays,andtheNumenoreanswerestrongandtall,andterribleintheirwrath.AgainstAeglosthespearofGil-galadnonecouldstand;andtheswordofElendilfilledOrcsandMenwithfear,foritshonewiththelightofthesunandofthemoon,anditwasnamedNarsil.
ThenGil-galadandElendilpassedintoMordorandencompassedthestrongholdofSauron;andtheylaidsiegetoitforsevenyears,andsufferedgrievouslossbyfireandbythedartsandboltsoftheEnemy,andSauronsentmanysortiesagainstthem.ThereinthevalleyofGorgorothAnarionsonofElendilwasslain,andmanyothers.
