ItissaidthatthetowersofEmynBeraidwerenotbuiltindeedbytheExilesofNumenor,butwereraisedbyGilgaladforElendil,hisfriend;andtheSeeingStoneofEmynBeraidwassetinElostirion,thetallestofthetowers.
ThitherElendilwouldrepair,andthencehewouldgazeoutoverthesunderingseas,whentheyearningofexilewasuponhim;anditisbelievedthatthushewouldatwhilesseefarawayeventheTowerofAvalloneuponEressea,wheretheMasterstoneabode,andyetabides.ThesestonesweregiftsoftheEldartoAmandil,fatherofElendil,forthecomfortoftheFaithfulofNumenorintheirdarkdays,whentheElvesmightcomenolongertothatlandundertheshadowofSauron.TheywerecalledthePalantiri,thosethatwatchfromafar;butallthosethatwerebroughttoMiddleearthlongagowerelost.
