IsildurandAnarionwereborneawaysouthwards,andatthelasttheybroughttheirshipsuptheGreatRiverAnduin,thatflowsoutofRhovanionintothewesternseaintheBayofBelfalas;andtheyestablishedarealminthoselandsthatwereaftercalledGondor,whereastheNorthernKingdomwasnamedArnor.LongbeforeinthedaysoftheirpowerthemarinersofNumenorhadestablishedahavenandstrongplacesaboutthemouthsofAnduin,indespiteofSauronintheBlackLandthatlaynighupontheeast.InthelaterdaystothishavencameonlytheFaithfulofNumenor,andmanythereforeofthefolkofthecoastlandsinthatregionwereinwholeorinpartakintotheElf-friendsandthepeopleofElendil,andtheywelcomedhissons.ThechiefcityofthissouthernrealmwasOsgiliath,throughthemidstofwhichtheGreatRiverflowed;andtheNumenoreansbuiltthereagreatbridge,uponwhichthereweretowersandhousesofstonewonderfultobehold,andtallshipscameupoutoftheseatothequaysofthecity.
