ButwhenthedevouringwaverolledoverthelandandNumenortoppledtoitsfall,thenhewouldhavebeenoverwhelmedandwouldhavedeemeditthelessergrieftoperish,fornowrenchofdeathcouldbemorebitterthanthelossandagonyofthatday;butthegreatwindtookhim,wilderthananywindthatMenhadknown,roaringfromthewest,anditswepthisshipsfaraway;anditrenttheirsailsandsnappedtheirmasts,huntingtheunhappymenlikestrawsuponthewater.
Nineshipstherewere:fourforElendil,andforIsildurthree,andforAnariontwo;andtheyfledbeforetheblackgaleoutofthetwilightofdoomintothedarknessoftheworld.Andthedeepsrosebeneaththemintoweringanger,andwaveslikeuntomountainsmovingwithgreatcapsofwrithensnowborethemupamidthewreckageoftheclouds,andaftermanydayscastthemawayupontheshoresofMiddle-earth.Andallthecoastsandseawardregionsofthewesternworldsufferedgreatchangeandruininthattime;fortheseasinvadedthelands,andshoresfoundered,andancientislesweredrowned,andnewisleswereuplifted;andhillscrumbledandriverswereturnedintostrangecourses.
ElendilandhissonsafterfoundedkingdomsinMiddle-earth;andthoughtheirloreandcraftwasbutanechoofthatwhichhadbeenereSauroncametoNumenor,yetverygreatitseemedtothewildmenoftheworld.AndmuchissaidinotherloreofthedeedsoftheheirsofElendilintheagethatcameafter,andoftheirstrifewithSauronthatnotyetwasended.
