ButwhetherornoitwerethatAmandilcameindeedtoValinorandManwehearkenedtohisprayer,bygraceoftheValarElendilandhissonsandtheirpeopleweresparedfromtheruinofthatday.ForElendilhadremainedinRomenna,refusingthesummonsoftheKingwhenhesetforthtowar;andavoidingthesoldiersofSauronthatcametoseizehimanddraghimtothefiresoftheTemple,hewentaboardhisshipandstoodofffromtheshore,waitingonthetime.Therehewasprotectedbythelandfromthegreatdraughtoftheseathatdrewalltowardstheabyss,andafterwardshewasshelteredfromthefirstfuryofthestorm.
