ForSauronhimselfwasfilledwithgreatfearatthewrathoftheValar,andthedoomthatErulaiduponseaandland.Itwasgreaterfarthanaughthehadlookedfor,hopingonlyforthedeathoftheNumenoreansandthedefeatoftheirproudking.AndSauron,sittinginhisblackseatinthemidstoftheTemple,hadlaughedwhenheheardthetrumpetsofAr-Pharazonsoundingforbattle;andagainhehadlaughedwhenheheardthethunderofthestorm;andathirdtime,evenashelaughedathisownthought,thinkingwhathewoulddonowintheworld,beingridoftheEdainforever,hewastakeninthemidstofhismirth,andhisseatandhistemplefellintotheabyss.ButSauronwasnotofmortalflesh,andthoughhewasrobbednowofthatshapeinwhichhehadwroughtsogreatanevil,sothathecouldneveragainappearfairtotheeyesofMen,yethisspiritaroseoutofthedeepandpassedasashadowandablackwindoverthesea,andcamebacktoMiddle-earthandtoMordorthatwashishome.TherehetookupagainhisgreatRinginBarad-dur,anddweltthere,darkandsilent,untilhewroughthimselfanewguise,animageofmaliceandhatredmadevisible;andtheEyeofSaurontheTerriblefewcouldendure.
