Thereafterthefireandsmokewentupwithoutceasing;forthepowerofSaurondailyincreased,andinthattemple,withspillingofbloodandtormentandgreatwickedness,menmadesacrificetoMelkorthatheshouldreleasethemfromDeath.AndmostoftenfromamongtheFaithfultheychosetheirvictims;yetneveropenlyonthechargethattheywouldnotworshipMelkor,theGiverofFreedom,ratherwascausesoughtagainstthemthattheyhatedtheKingandwerehisrebels,orthattheyplottedagainsttheirkin,devisingliesandpoisons.Thesechargeswereforthemostpartfalse;yetthosewerebitterdays,andhatebringsforthhate.
ButforallthisDeathdidnotdepartfromtheland,ratheritcamesoonerandmoreoften,andinmanydreadfulguises.Forwhereasaforetimemenhadgrownslowlyold,andhadlaidthemdownintheendtosleep,whentheywerewearyatlastoftheworld,nowmadnessandsicknessassailedthem;andyettheywereafraidtodieandgooutintothedark,therealmofthelordthattheyhadtaken;andtheycursedthemselvesintheiragony.
