NonethelessforlongitseemedtotheNumenoreansthattheyprospered,andiftheywerenotincreasedinhappiness,yettheygrewmorestrong,andtheirrichmeneverricher.ForwiththeaidandcounselofSaurontheymultipliedthen:possessions,andtheydevisedengines,andtheybuiltevergreaterships.AndtheysailednowwithpowerandarmourytoMiddle-earth,andtheycamenolongerasbringersofgifts,norevenasrulers,butasfiercemenofwar.AndtheyhuntedthemenofMiddle-earthandtooktheirgoodsandenslavedthem,andmanytheyslewcruellyupontheiraltars.Fortheybuiltintheirfortressestemplesandgreattombsinthosedays;andmenfearedthem,andthememoryofthekindlykingsoftheancientdaysfadedfromtheworldandwasdarkenedbymanyataleofdread.
ThusAr-Pharazon,KingoftheLandoftheStar,grewtothemightiesttyrantthathadyetbeenintheworldsincethereignofMorgoth,thoughintruthSauronruledallfrombehindthethrone.Buttheyearspassed,andtheKingfelttheshadowofdeathapproach,ashisdayslengthened;andhewasfilledwithfearandwrath.NowcamethehourthatSauronhadpreparedandlonghadawaited.
