AtthefirsttheKingwouldnotassenttothis,sincebebelievedthatthefortunesofhishousewereboundupwiththeTree,aswasforespokenbyTar-Palantir.ThusinhisfollyhewhonowhatedtheEldarandtheValarvainlyclungtotheshadowoftheoldallegianceofNumenor.ButwhenAmandilheardrumouroftheevilpurposeofSauronhewasgrievedtotheheart,knowingthatintheendSauronwouldsurelyhavehiswill.ThenhespoketoElendilandthesonsofElendil,recallingthetaleoftheTreesofValinor;andIsildursaidnoword,butwentoutbynightanddidadeedforwhichhewasafterwardsrenowned.ForhepassedaloneindisguisetoArmenelosandtothecourtsoftheKing,whichwerenowforbiddentotheFaithful;andhecametotheplaceoftheTree,whichwasforbiddentoallbytheordersofSauron,andtheTreewaswatcheddayandnightbyguardsinhisservice.AtthattimeNimlothwasdarkandborenobloom,foritwaslateintheautumn,anditswinterwasnigh;andIsildurpassedthroughtheguardsandtookfromtheTreeafruitthathunguponit,andturnedtogo.
