AmandilandElendilweregreatship-captains;andtheywereofthelineofElrosTar-Minyatur,thoughnotoftherulinghousetowhombelongedthecrownandthethroneinthecityofArmenelos.InthedaysoftheiryouthtogetherAmandilhadbeendeartoPharazon,andthoughhewasoftheElf-friendsheremainedinhiscounciluntilthecomingofSauron.
Nowhewasdismissed,forSauronhatedhimaboveallothersinNumenor.Buthewassonoble,andhadbeensomightyacaptainofthesea,thathewasstillheldinhonourbymanyofthepeople,andneithertheKingnorSaurondaredtolayhandsonhimasyet.
ThereforeAmandilwithdrewtoRomenna,andallthathetrustedstilltobefaithfulhesummonedtocomethitherinsecret;forhefearedthatevilwouldnowgrowapace,andalltheElf-friendswereinperil.Andsoitsooncametopass.
