ForheperceivedthatthepowerandmajestyoftheKingsoftheSeasurpassedallrumourofthem,sothathecouldnottrusteventhegreatestofhisservantstowithstandthem;andhesawnothistimeyettoworkhiswillwiththeDunedain.Andhewascrafty,wellskilledtogainwhathewouldbysubtletywhenforcemightnotavail.ThereforehehumbledhimselfbeforeAr-Pharazonandsmoothedhistongue;andmenwondered,forallthathesaidseemedfairandwise.
ButAr-Pharazonwasnotyetdeceived,anditcameintohismindthat,forthebetterkeepingofSauronandofhisoathsoffealty,heshouldbebroughttoNumenor,theretodwellasahostageforhimselfandallhisservantsinMiddleearth.TothisSauronassentedasoneconstrained,yetinhissecretthoughthereceiveditgladly,foritchimedindeedwithhisdesire.AndSauronpassedovertheseaandlookeduponthelandofNumenor,andonthecityofArmenelosinthedaysofitsglory,andhewasastounded;buthisheartwithinwasfilledthemorewithenvyandhate.
Yetsuchwasthecunningofhismindandmouth,andthestrengthofhishiddenwill,thaterethreeyearshadpassedhehadbecomeclosesttothesecretcounselsoftheKing;forflatterysweetashoneywaseveronhistongue,andknowledgehehadofmanythingsyetunrevealedtoMen.Andseeingthefavourthathehadoftheirlordallthecouncillorsbegantofawnuponhim,saveonealone,AmandillordofAndunie.
