AndAtanamirlivedtoagreatage,clingingtohislifebeyondtheendofalljoy;andhewasthefirstoftheNumenoreanstodothis,refusingtodepartuntilhewaswitlessandunmanned,anddenyingtohissonthekingshipattheheightofhisdays.FortheLordsofNumenorhadbeenwonttowedlateintheirlonglivesandtodepartandleavethemasterytotheirsonswhenthesewerecometofullstatureofbodyandmind.ThenTar-Ancalimon,sonofAtanamir,becameKing,andhewasoflikemind;andinhisdaythepeopleofNumenorbecamedivided.Ontheonehandwasthegreaterparty,andtheywerecalledtheKing’sMen,andtheygrewproudandwereestrangedfromtheEldarandtheValar.Andontheotherhandwasthelesserparty,andtheywerecalledtheElendili,theElf-friends;forthoughtheyremainedloyalindeedtotheKingandtheHouseofElros,theywishedtokeepthefriendshipoftheEldar,andtheyhearkenedtothecounseloftheLordsoftheWest.Nonethelesseventhey,whonamedthemselvestheFaithful,didnotwhollyescapefromtheafflictionoftheirpeople,andtheyweretroubledbythethoughtofdeath.
ThustheblissofWesternessebecamediminished;butstillitsmightandsplendourincreased.Forthekingsandtheirpeoplehadnotyetabandonedwisdom,andiftheylovedtheValarnolongeratleasttheystillfearedthem.TheydidnotdareopenlytobreaktheBanortosailbeyondthelimitsthathadbeenappointed.Eastwardsstilltheysteeredtheirtallships.
