Andthisismydecreeconcerningthem:toEarendilandtoElwing,andtotheirsons,shallbegivenleaveeachtochoosefreelytowhichkindredtheirfatesshallbejoined,andunderwhichkindredtheyshallbejudged.’
NowwhenEarendilwaslongtimegoneElwingbecamelonelyandafraid;andwanderingbythemarginoftheseashecameneartoAlqualonde,wherelaytheTelerinfleets.TheretheTeleribefriendedher,andtheylistenedtohertalesofDoriathandGondolinandthegriefsofBeleriand,andtheywerefilledwithpityandwonder;andthereEarendilreturningfoundher,attheHavenoftheSwans.ButerelongtheyweresummonedtoValimar;andtherethedecreeoftheElderKingwasdeclaredtothem.
ThenEarendilsaidtoElwing:’Choosethou,fornowIamwearyoftheworld.’AndElwingchosetobejudgedamongtheFirstbornChildrenofIluvatar,becauseofLuthien;andforhersakeEarendilchosealike,thoughhisheartwasratherwiththekindredofMenandthepeopleofhisfather.
