ThenatthebiddingoftheValarEonwewenttotheshoreofAman,wherethecompanionsofEarendilstillremained,awaitingtidings;andhetookaboat,andthethreemarinersweresettherein,andtheValardrovethemawayintotheEastwithagreatwind.ButtheytookVingilot,andhallowedit,andboreitawaythroughValinortotheuttermostrimoftheworld;andthereitpassedthroughtheDoorofNightandwasliftedupevenintotheoceansofheaven.
Nowfairandmarvellouswasthatvesselmade,anditwasfilledwithawaveringflame,pureandbright;andEarendiltheMarinersatatthehelm,glisteningwithdustofelven-gems,andtheSilmarilwasbounduponhisbrow.Farhejourneyedinthatship,evenintothestarlessvoids;butmostoftenwasheseenatmorningoratevening,glimmeringinsunriseorsunset,ashecamebacktoValinorfromvoyagesbeyondtheconfinesoftheworld.
OnthosejourneysElwingdidnotgo,forshemightnotendurethecoldandthepathlessvoids,andshelovedrathertheearthandthesweetwindsthatblowonseaandhill.ThereforetherewasbuiltforherawhitetowernorthwarduponthebordersoftheSunderingSeas;andthitherattimesallthesea-birdsoftheearthrepaired.AnditissaidthatElwinglearnedthetonguesofbirds,whoherselfhadonceworntheirshape;andtheytaughtherthecraftofflight,andherwingswereofwhiteandsilver-grey.Andattimes,whenEarendilreturningdrewnearagaintoArda,shewouldflytomeethim,evenasshehadflownlongago,whenshewasrescuedfromthesea.
