ThenEarendilsaidtoElwing:’Awaitmehere;foroneonlymaybringthemessagethatitismyfatetobear.’Andhewentupaloneintotheland,andcameintotheCalacirya,anditseemedtohimemptyandsilent;forevenasMorgothandUngoliantcameinagespast,sonowEarendilhadcomeatatimeoffestival,andwellnighalltheElvenfolkweregonetoValimar,orweregatheredinthehallsofManweuponTaniquetil,andfewwerelefttokeepwatchuponthewallsofTirion.
Butsometherewerewhosawhimfromafar,andthegreatlightthathebore;andtheywentinhastetoValimar.
ButEarendilclimbedthegreenhillofTunaandfounditbare;andheenteredintothestreetsofTirion,andtheywereempty;andhisheartwasheavy,forhefearedthatsomeevilhadcomeeventotheBlessedRealm.HewalkedinthedesertedwaysofTirion,andthedustuponhisraimentandhisshoeswasadustofdiamonds,andheshoneandglistenedasheclimbedthelongwhitestairs.Andhecalledaloudinmanytongues,bothofElvesandMen,buttherewerenonetoanswerhim.
