YetEarendilsawnownohopeleftinthelandsofMiddle-earth,andheturnedagainindespairandcamenothome,butsoughtbackoncemoretoValinorwithElwingathisside.HestoodnowmostoftenattheprowofVingilot,andtheSilmarilwasbounduponhisbrow;andeveritslightgrewgreaterastheydrewintotheWest.AndthewisehavesaidthatitwasbyreasonofthepowerofthatholyjewelthattheycameintimetowatersthatnovesselssavethoseoftheTelerihadknown;andtheycametotheEnchantedIslesandescapedtheirenchantment;andtheycameintotheShadowySeasandpassedtheirshadows,andtheylookeduponTolEresseatheLonelyIsle,buttarriednot;andatthelasttheycastanchorintheBayofEldamar,andtheTelerisawthecomingofthatshipoutoftheEastandtheywereamazed,gazingfromafaruponthelightoftheSilmaril,anditwasverygreat.ThenEarendil,firstoflivingMen,landedontheimmortalshores;andhespoketheretoElwingandtothosethatwerewithhim,andtheywerethreemarinerswhohadsailedalltheseasbesideshim:Falathar,Erellont,andAerandirweretheirnames.AndEarendilsaidtothem:’Herenonebutmyselfshallsetfoot,lestyoufallunderthewrathoftheValar.ButthatperilIwilltakeonmyselfalone,forthesakeoftheTwoKindreds.’
