ThusMaedhrosandMaglorgainednotthejewel;butitwasnotlost.ForUlmoboreupElwingoutofthewaves,andhegaveherthelikenessofagreatwhitebird,anduponherbreastthereshoneasastartheSilmaril,assheflewoverthewatertoseekEarendilherbeloved.OnatimeofnightEarendilatthehelmofhisshipsawhercometowardshim,asawhitecloudexceedingswiftbeneaththemoon,asastarovertheseamovinginstrangecourse,apaleflameonwingsofstorm.AnditissungthatshefellfromtheairuponthetimbersofVingilot,inaswoon,nighuntodeathfortheurgencyofherspeed,andEarendiltookhertohisbosom;butinthemorningwithmarvellingeyeshebeheldhiswifeinherownformbesidehimwithherhairuponhisface,andsheslept.
GreatwasthesorrowofEarendilandElwingfortheruinofthehavensofSirion,andthecaptivityoftheirsons,andtheyfearedthattheywouldbeslain;butitwasnotso.ForMaglortookpityuponElrosandElrond,andhecherishedthem,andlovegrewafterbetweenthem,aslittlemightbethought;butMaglor’sheartwassickandwearywiththeburdenofthedreadfuloath.
