NowwhenfirstthetidingscametoMaedhrosthatElwingyetlived,anddweltinpossessionoftheSilmarilbythemouthsofSirion,herepentingofthedeedsinDoriathwithheldhishand.Butintimetheknowledgeoftheiroathunfulfilledreturnedtotormenthimandhisbrothers,andgatheringfromtheirwanderinghunting-pathstheysentmessagestotheHavensoffriendshipandyetofsterndemand.ThenElwingandthepeopleofSirionwouldnotyieldthejewelwhichBerenhadwonandLuthienhadworn,andforwhichDiorthefairwasslain;andleastofallwhileEarendiltheirlordwasonthesea,foritseemedtothemthatintheSilmarillaythehealingandtheblessingthathadcomeupontheirhousesandtheirships.AndsotherecametopassthelastandcruellestoftheslayingsofElfbyElf;andthatwasthethirdofthegreatwrongsachievedbytheaccursedoath.
ForthesonsofFeanorthatyetlivedcamedownsuddenlyupontheexilesofGondolinandtheremnantofDoriath,anddestroyedthem.Inthatbattlesomeoftheirpeoplestoodaside,andsomefewrebelledandwereslainupontheotherpartaidingElwingagainsttheirownlords(forsuchwasthesorrowandconfusionintheheartsoftheEldarinthosedays);butMaedhrosandMaglorwontheday,thoughtheyaloneremainedthereafterofthesonsofFeanor,forbothAmrodandAmraswereslain.
