ThenTurgonponderedlongthecounselofUlmo,andtherecameintohismindthewordsthatwerespokentohiminVinyamar:’Lovenottoowelltheworkofthyhandsandthedevicesofthyheart;andrememberthatthetruehopeoftheNoldorliethintheWest,andcomethfromtheSea.’ButTurgonwasbecomeproud,andGondolinasbeautifulasamemoryofElvenTirion,andhetrustedstillinitssecretandimpregnablestrength,thoughevenaValashouldgainsayit;andaftertheNirnaethArnoediadthepeopleofthatcitydesiredneveragaintomingleinthewoesofElvesandMenwithout,nortoreturnthroughdreadanddangerintotheWest.Shutbehindtheirpathlessandenchantedhillstheysufferednonetoenter,thoughhefledfromMorgothhate-pursued;andtidingsofthelandsbeyondcametothemfaintandfar,andtheyheededthemlittle.ThespiesofAngbandsoughtfortheminvain;andtheirdwellingwasasarumour,andasecretthatnonecouldfind.MaeglinspokeeveragainstTuorinthecouncilsoftheKing,andhiswordsseemedthemoreweightyinthattheywentwithTurgon’sheart;andatthelastherejectedthebiddingofUlmoandrefusedhiscounsel.ButinthewarningoftheValaheheardagainthewordsthatwerespokenbeforethedepartingNoldoronthecoastofAramanlongago;andthefearoftreasonwaswakenedinTurgon’sheart.ThereforeinthattimetheveryentrancetothehiddendoorintheEncirclingMountainswascausedtobeblockedup;andthereafternonewenteverforthfromGondolinonanyerrandofpeaceorwar,whilethatcitystood.
