ButwhenthatshipreturningatlastoutofthedeepoceanfounderedinthegreatstormwithinsightofthecoastsofMiddle-earth,Ulmotookhimup,aloneofallitsmariners,andcasthimontothelandnearVinyamar;andlearningofthecommandlaiduponTuorbytheLordofWatersVoronwewasfilledwithwonder,anddidnotrefusehimhisguidancetothehiddendoorofGondolin.Thereforetheysetouttogetherfromthatplace,andastheFellWinterofthatyearcamedownuponthemoutofthenorththeywentwarilyeastwardundertheeavesoftheMountainsofShadow/AtlengththeycameintheirjourneyingtothePoolsofIvrin,andlookedwithgriefonthedefilementwroughttherebythepassageofGlaurungtheDragon;butevenastheygazeduponittheysawonegoingnorthwardinhaste,andhewasatallMan,cladinblack,andbearingablacksword.Buttheyknewnotwhohewas,noranythingofwhathadbefalleninthesouth;andhepassedthemby,andtheysaidnoword.
AndatthelastbythepowerthatUlmosetuponthemtheycametothehiddendoorofGondolin,andpassingdownthetunneltheyreachedtheinnergate,andweretakenbytheguardasprisoners.ThentheywereledupthemightyravineofOrfalchEchor,barredbysevengates,andbroughtbeforeEcthelionoftheFountain,thewardenofthegreatgateattheendoftheclimbingroad;andthereTuorcastasidehiscloak,andfromthearmsthatheborefromVinyamaritwasseenthathewasintruthonesentbyUlmo.
