SodiedinthedeepplacesofMenegrothElweSingollo,KingofDoriath,whoaloneofalltheChildrenofIluvatarwasjoinedwithoneoftheAinur;andhewho,aloneoftheForsakenElves,hadseenthelightoftheTreesofValinor,withhislastsightgazedupontheSilmaril.
ThentheDwarvestakingtheNauglamirpassedoutofMenegrothandfledeastwardsthroughRegion.Buttidingswentswiftlythroughtheforest,andfewofthatcompanycameoverAros,fortheywerepursuedtothedeathastheysoughttheeastwardroad;andtheNauglamirwasretaken,andbroughtbackinbittergrieftoMeliantheQueen.
YettwotherewereoftheslayersofThingolwhoescapedfromthepursuitontheeasternmarches,andreturnedatlasttotheircityfaroffintheBlueMountains;andthereinNogrodtheytoldsomewhatofallthathadbefallen,sayingthattheDwarveswereslaininDoriathbycommandoftheElvenking,whothuswouldcheatthemoftheirreward.
ThengreatwasthewrathandlamentationoftheDwarvesofNogrodforthedeathoftheirkinandtheirgreatcraftsmen,andtheytoretheirbeards,andwailed;andlongtheysattakingthoughtforvengeance.ItistoldthattheyaskedaidfromBelegost,butitwasdeniedthem,andtheDwarvesofBelegostsoughttodissuadethemfromtheirpurpose;buttheircounselwasunavailing,anderelongagreathostcameforthfromNogrod,andcrossingoverGelionmarchedwestwardthroughBeleriand.
UponDoriathaheavychangehadfallen.
