Intimehisdesirewasachieved,andthegreatestoftheworksofElvesandDwarveswerebroughttogetherandmadeone;anditsbeautywasverygreat,fornowthecountlessjewelsoftheNauglamirdidreflectandcastabroadinmarvelloushuesthelightoftheSilmarilamidmost.ThenThingol,beingaloneamongthem,madetotakeitupandclaspitabouthisneck;buttheDwarvesmthatmomentwithhelditfromhim,anddemandedthatheyieldituptothem,saying:’BywhatrightdoestheElvenkinglayclaimtotheNauglamir,thatwasmadebyourfathersforFinrodFelagundwhoisdead?IthascometohimbutbythehandofHurintheManofDor-lomin,whotookitasathiefoutofthedarknessofNargothrond.’ButThingolperceivedtheirhearts,andsawwellthatdesiringtheSilmariltheysoughtbutapretextandfaircloakfortheirtrueintent;andinhiswrathandpridehegavenoheedtohisperil,butspoketotheminscorn,saying:’Howdoyeofuncouthracedaretodemandaughtofme,EluThingol,LordofBeleriand,whoselifebeganbythewatersofCuivienenyearsuncountederethefathersofthestuntedpeopleawoke?’AndstandingtallandproudamongthemhebadethemwithshamefulwordsbegoneunrequitedoutofDoriath.
ThenthelustoftheDwarveswaskindledtoragebythewordsoftheKing;andtheyroseupabouthim,andlaidhandsonhim,andslewhimashestood.
