MelkormettheonsetoftheValarintheNorth-westofMiddle-earth,andallthatregionwasmuchbroken.ButthefirstvictoryofthehostsoftheWestwasswift,andtheservantsofMelkorfledbeforethemtoUtumno.ThentheValarpassedoverMiddle-earth,andtheysetaguardoverCuivienen;andthereaftertheQuendiknewnothingofthegreatBattleofthePowers,savethattheEarthshookandgroanedbeneaththem,andthewatersweremoved,andinthenorththerewerelightsasofmightyfires.LongandgrievouswasthesiegeofUtumno,andmanybattleswerefoughtbeforeitsgatesofwhichnaughtbuttherumourisknowntotheElves.InthattimetheshapeofMiddle-earthwaschanged,andtheGreatSeathatsundereditfromAmangrewwideanddeep;anditbrokeinuponthecoastsandmadeadeepgulftothesouthward.ManylesserbaysweremadebetweentheGreatGulfandHelcaraxefarinthenorth,whereMiddle-earthandAmancamenightogether.OfthesetheBayofBalarwasthechief;andintoitthemightyriverSirionfloweddownfromthenew-raisedhighlandsnorthwards:Dorthonion,andthemountainsaboutHithlum.Thelandsofthefarnorthwereallmadedesolateinthosedays;forthereUtumnowasdelvedexceedingdeep,anditspitswerefilledwithfiresandwithgreathostsoftheservantsofMelkor.
ButatthelastthegatesofUtumnowerebrokenandthehallsunroofed,andMelkortookrefugeintheuttermostpit.ThenTulkasstoodforthaschampionoftheValarandwrestledwithhim,andcasthimuponhisface;andhewasboundwiththechainAngainorthatAulehadwrought,andledcaptive;andtheworldhadpeaceforalongage.
NonethelesstheValardidnotdiscoverallthemightyvaultsandcavernshiddenwithdeceitfarunderthefortressesofAngbandandUtumno.Manyevilthingsstilllingeredthere,andothersweredispersedandfledintothedarkandroamedinthewasteplacesoftheworld,awaitingamoreevilhour;andSaurontheydidnotfind.
