ThenBerensprangfrombeforeCelegormfulluponthespeedinghorseofCurufinthathadpassedhi;andtheLeapofBerenisrenownedamongthathadpassedhim;andtheLeapofBerenisrenownedamongMenandElves.HetookCurufinbythethroatfrombehind,andhurledhimbackward,andtheyfelltothegroundtogether.Thehorserearedandfell,butLuthienwasflungaside,andlayuponthegrass.
ThenBerenthrottledCurufin;butdeathwasnearhim,forCelegormrodeuponhimwithaspear.inthathourHuanforsooktheserviceorCelegorm,andspranguponhim,sothathishorseswervedaside,andwouldnotapproachBerenbecauseoftheterrorofthegreathound.Celegormcursedbothhoundandhorse,butHuanwasunmoved.ThenLuthienrisingforbadetheslayingofCurufin;butBerendespoiledhimofhisgearandweapons,andtookhisknife,sheathlessbyhisside;ironitwouldcleaveasifitweregreenwood.ThenBerenliftingCurufinflunghimfromhim,andbadehimwalknowbacktohisnoblekinsfolk,whomightteachhimtoturnhisvalourtoworthieruse.’Yourhorse,’hesaid,’IkeepfortheserviceofLuthien,anditmaybeaccountedhappytobefreeofsuchamaster.’
ThenCurufincursedBerenundercloudandsky.’Gohence,’hesaid,’untoaswiftandbitterdeath.’Celegormtookhimbesidehimonhishorse,andthebrothersmadethenasiftorideaway;andBerenturnedawayandtooknoheedoftheirwords.ButCurufin,beingfilledwithshameandmalice,tookthebowofCelegormandshotbackastheywent;andthearrowwasaimedatLuthien.
