NowitistoldthatBerenandLuthiencameintheirwanderingintotheForestsofBrethil,anddrewnearatlasttothebordersofDoriath.ThenBerentookthoughtofhisvow;andagainsthisheartheresolved,whenLuthienwascomeagainwithinthesafetyofherownland,tosetforthoncemore.Butshewasnotwillingtobepartedformhimagain,saying:’Youmustchoose,Beren,betweenthesetwo:torelinquishthequestandyouroathandseekalifeofwanderinguponthefaceoftheearth;ortoholdtoyourwordandchallengethepowerofdarknessuponitsthrone.ButoneitherroadIshallgowithyou,andourdoomshallbealike.’
Evenastheyspoketogetherofthesethings,walkingwithoutheedofaughtelse,CelegormandCurufinrodeup,hasteningthroughtheforest;andthebrothersespiedthemandknewthemforafar.ThenCelegormturnedhishorse,andspurredituponBeren,purposingtoridehimdown;butCurufinswervingstoopedandliftedLuthientohissaddle,forhewasastrongandcunninghorseman.
