ThesonsofFinarfinboremostheavilythebruntoftheassault,andAngrodandAegnorwereslain;besidethemfellBregolaslordofthehouseofBeor,andagreatpartofthewarriorsofthatpeople.ButBarahirthebrotherofBregolaswasinthefightingfartherwestward,neartothePassofSirion.ThereKingFinrodFelagund,hasteningfromthesouth,wascutofffromhispeopleandsurroundedwithsmallcompanyinthePenofSerech;andhewouldhavebeenslainortaken,butBarahircameupwiththebravestofhismenandrescuedhim,andmadeawallofspearsabouthim;andtheycuttheirwayoutofthebattlewithgreatloss.ThusFelagundescaped,andreturnedtohisdeepfortressofNargothrond;buthesworeanoathofabidingfriendshipandaidineveryneedtoBarahirandallhiskin,andintokenofhisvowhegavetoBarahirhisring.BarahirwasnowbyrightlordofthehouseofBeor,andhereturnedtoDorthonion;butmostofhispeoplefledfromtheirhomesandtookrefugeinthefastnessofHithlum.
