OfhisdealingswithMentheEldarindeedknewnothing,atthattime,andlearntbutlittleafterwards;butthatadarknesslayupontheheartsofMen(astheshadowoftheKinslayingandtheDoomofMandoslayupontheNoldor)theyperceivedclearlyeveninthepeopleoftheElf-friendswhomtheyfirstknew.TocorruptordestroywhatsoeverarosenewandfairwaseverthechiefdesireofMorgoth;anddoubtlesshehadthispurposealsoinhiserrand:byfearandliestomakeMenthefoesoftheEldar,andbringthemupoutoftheeastagainstBeleriand.Butthisdesignwasslowtoripen,andwasneverwhollyachieved;forMen(itissaid)wereatfirstveryfewinnumber,whereasMorgothgrewafraidofthegrowingpowerandunionoftheEldarandcamebacktoAngband,leavingbehindatthattimebutfewservants,andthoseoflessmightandcunning.
NowFelagundlearnedfromBeorthatthereweremanyotherMenoflikemindwhowerealsojourneyingwestward.’OthersofmyownkinhavecrossedtheMountains,’hesaid,’andtheyarewanderingnotfaraway;andtheHaladin,apeoplefromwhomwearesunderedinspeech,arestillinthevalleysontheeasternslopes,awaitingtidingsbeforetheyventurefurther.ThereareyetotherMen,whosetongueismoreliketoours,withwhomwehavehaddealingsattimes.Theywerebeforeusonthewestwardmarch,butwepassedthem;fortheyareanumerouspeople,andyetkeeptogetherandmoveslowly,beingallruledbyonechieftainwhomtheycallMarach.’
