NowtheEldarwerebeyondallotherpeoplesskilledintongues;andFelagunddiscoveredalsothathecouldreadinthemindsofMensuchthoughtsastheywishedtorevealinspeech,sothattheirwordswereeasilyinterpreted.ItissaidalsothattheseMenhadlonghaddealingswiththeDarkElveseastofthemountains,andfromthemhadlearnedmuchoftheirspeech;andsinceallthelanguagesoftheQuendiwereofoneorigin,thelanguageofBeorandhisfolkresembledtheElven-tongueinmanywordsanddevices.ItwasnotlongthereforebeforeFelagundcouldholdconversewithBeor;andwhilehedweltwithhimtheyspokemuchtogether.ButwhenhequestionedhimconcerningthearisingofMenandtheirjourneys,Beorwouldsaylittle;andindeedheknewlittle,forthefathersofhispeoplehadtoldfewtalesoftheirpastandasilencehadfallenupontheirmemory.’Adarknessliesbehindus,’Beorsaid;’andwehaveturnedourbacksuponit,andwedonotdesiretoreturnthithereveninthought.Westwardsourheartshavebeenturned,andwebelievethatthereweshallfindLight.’
ButitwassaidafterwardsamongtheEldarthatwhenMenawokeinHildorienattherisingoftheSunthespiesofMorgothwerewatchful,andtidingsweresoonbroughttohim;andthisseemedtohimsogreatamatterthatsecretlyundershadowhehimselfdepartedfromAngband,andwentforthintoMiddle-earth,leavingtoSauronthecommandoftheWar.
