BetweenDorthonionandtheShadowyMountainstherewasanarrowvale,whosesheerwallswerecladwithpines;butthevaleitselfwasgreen,fortheRiverSirionflowedthroughit,hasteningtowardsBeleriand.FinrodheldthePassofSirion,andupontheisleofTolSirioninthemidstoftheriverhebuiltamightywatch-tower,MinasTirith;butafterNargothrondwasmadehecommittedthatfortressmostlytothekeepingofOrodrethhisbrother.
NowthegreatandfaircountryofBeleriandlayoneithersideofthemightyriverSirion,renownedinsong,whichroseatEithelSirionandskirtedtheedgeofArd-galenereheplungedthroughthepass,becomingeverfullerwiththestreamsofthemountains.
