WestofDor-lomin,beyondtheEchoingMountains,whichsouthoftheFirthofDrengistmarchedinland,layNevrast,thatsignifiestheHitherShoreintheSindarintongue.Thatnamewasgivenatfirsttoallthecoast-landssouthoftheFirth,butafterwardsonlytothelandwhoseshoreslaybetweenDrengistandMountTaras.ThereformanyyearswastherealmofTurgonthewise,sonofFingolfin,boundedbythesea,andbyEredLomin,andbythehillswhichcontinuedthewallsofEredWethrinwestward,fromIvrintoMountTaras,whichstooduponapromontory.BysomeNevrastwasheldtobelongrathertoBeleriandthantoHithlum,foritwasamilderland,wateredbythewetwindsfromtheseaandshelteredfromthecoldnorthwindsthatblewoverHithlum.Itwasahollowland,surroundedbymountainsandgreatcoast-cliffshigherthantheplainsbehind,andnoriverflowedthence;andtherewasagreatmereinthemidstofNevrast,withnocertainshores,beingencircledbywidemarshes.Linaewenwasthenameofthatmere,becauseofthemultitudeofbirdsthatdweltthere,ofsuchaslovetallreedsandshallowpools.AtthecomingoftheNoldormanyoftheGrey-elveslivedinNevrastneartothecoasts,andespeciallyaboutMountTarasinthesouth-west;fortothatplaceUlmoandOssehadbeenwonttocomeindaysofold.AllthatpeopletookTurgonfortheirlord,andtheminglingoftheNoldorandtheSindarcametopasssoonestthere;andTurgondweltlonginthosehallsthathenamedVinyamar,underMountTarasbesidethesea.
