WhennearlyonehundredyearshadrunsincetheDagorAglareb,MorgothendeavouredtotakeFingolfinatunawares(forheknewofthevigilanceofMaedhros);andhesentforthanarmyintothewhitenorth,andtheyturnedwestandagainsouthandcamedownthecoaststotheFirthofDrengist,bytheroutethatFingolfinfollowedfromtheGrindingIce.ThustheywouldenterintotherealmofHithlumfromthewest;buttheywereespiedintime,andFingonfelluponthemamongthehillsattheheadoftheFirth,andmostoftheOrcsweredrivenintothesea.Thiswasnotreckonedamongthegreatbattles,fortheOrcswerenotingreatnumber,andonlyapartofthepeopleofHithlumfoughtthere.Butthereaftertherewaspeaceformanyyears,andnoopenassaultfromAngband,forMorgothperceivednowthattheOrcsunaidedwerenomatchfortheNoldor;andhesoughtinhisheartfornewcounsel.
AgainafterahundredyearsGlaurung,thefirstoftheUruloki,thefire-drakesoftheNorth,issuedfromAngband’sgatesbynight.Hewasyetyoungandscarcehalf-grown,forlongandslowisthelifeofthedragons,buttheElvesfledbeforehimtoEredWethrinandDorthonionindismay;andhedefiledthefieldsofArd-galen.ThenFingonprinceofHithlumrodeagainsthimwitharchersonhorseback,andhemmedhimroundwitharingofswiftriders;andGlaurungcouldnotenduretheirdarts,beingnotyetcometohisfullarmoury,andhefledbacktoAngband,andcamenotforthagainformanyyears
