ForalongtimeafterDagorAglarebnoservantofMorgothwouldventurefromhisgates,fortheyfearedthelordsoftheNoldor;andFingolfinboastedthatsavebytreasonamongthemselvesMorgothcouldneveragainburstfromtheleagueroftheEldar,norcomeuponthematunawares.YettheNoldorcouldnotcaptureAngband,norcouldtheyregaintheSilmarils;andwarneverwhollyceasedinallthattimeoftheSiege,forMorgothdevisednewevils,andeverandanonhewouldmaketrialofhisenemies.NorcouldthestrongholdofMorgothbeeverwhollyencircled:fortheIronMountains,fromwhosegreatcurvingwallthetowersofThangorodrimwerethrustforward,defendedituponeitherside,andwereimpassabletotheNoldor,becauseoftheirsnowandice.ThusinhisrearandtothenorthMorgothhadnofoes,andbythatwayhisspiesattimeswentout,andcamebydeviousroutesintoBeleriand.AnddesiringabovealltosowfearanddisunionamongtheEldar,hecommandedtheOrcstotakealiveanyofthemthattheycouldandbringthemboundtoAngband;andsomehesodauntedbytheterrorofhiseyesthattheyneedednochainsmore,butwalkedeverinfearofhim,doinghiswillwherevertheymightbe.ThusMorgothlearnedmuchofallthathadbefallensincetherebellionofFeanor,andherejoiced,seeingthereintheseedofmanydissensionsamonghisfoes.
