NowMorgoth,believingthereportofhisspiesthatthelordsoftheNoldorwerewanderingabroadwithlittlethoughtofwar,madetrialofthestrengthandwatchfulnessofhisenemies.Oncemore,withlittlewarning,hismightwasstirred,andsuddenlytherewereearthquakesinthenorth,andfirecamefromfissuresintheearth,andtheIronMountainsvomitedflame;andOrcspouredforthacrosstheplainofArd-galen.ThencetheythrustdownthePassofSirioninthewest,andintheeasttheyburstthroughthelandofMaglor,inthegapbetweenthehillsofMaedhrosandtheoutliersoftheBlueMountains.ButFingolfinandMaedhroswerenotsleeping,andwhileotherssoughtoutthescatteredbandsofOrcsthatstrayedinBelerianddidgreateviltheycameuponthemainhostfromeithersideasitwasassaultingDorthonion;andtheydefeatedtheservantsofMorgoth,andpursuingthemacrossArd-galendestroyedthemutterly,totheleastandlast,withinsightofAngband’sgates.ThatwasthethirdgreatbattleoftheWarsofBeleriand,anditwasnamedDagorAglareb,theGloriousBattle.
Avictoryitwas,andyetawarning;andtheprincestookheedofit,andthereafterdrewclosertheirleaguer,andstrengthenedandorderedtheirwatch,settingtheSiegeofAngband.whichlastedwellnighfourhundredyearsoftheSun.
