Maedhrostherefore,beinginanguishwithouthope,beggedFingontoshoothimwithhisbow;andFingonstrunganarrow,andbenthisbow.AndseeingnobetterhopehecriedtoManwe,saying:’OKingtowhomallbirdsaredear,speednowthisfeatheredshaft,andrecallsomepityfortheNoldorintheirneed!’
Hisprayerwasansweredswiftly.ForManwetowhomallbirdsaredear,andtowhomtheybringnewsuponTaniquetilfromMiddle-earth,hadsentforththeraceofEagles,commandingthemtodwellinthecragsoftheNorth,andtokeepwatchuponMorgoth;forManwestillhadpityfortheexiledElves.AndtheEaglesbroughtnewsofmuchthatpassedinthosedaystothesadearsofManwe.Now,evenasFingonbenthisbow,thereflewdownfromthehighairsThorondor,KingofEagles,mightiestofallbirdsthathaveeverbeen,whoseoutstretchedwingsspannedthirtyfathoms;andstayingFingon’shandhetookhimup,andborehimtothefaceoftherockwhereMaedhroshung.ButFingoncouldnotreleasethehell-wroughtbonduponhiswrist,norseverit,nordrawitfromthestone.AgainthereforeinhispainMaedhrosbeggedthathewouldslayhim;butFingoncutoffhishandabovethewrist,andThorondorborethembacktoMithrim.
ThereMaedhrosintimewashealed;forthefireoflifewashotwithinhim,andhisstrengthwasoftheancientworld,suchasthosepossessedwhowerenurturedinValinor.
