ThenFingonthevaliant,sonofFingolfin,resolvedtohealthefeudthatdividedtheNoldor,beforetheirEnemyshouldbereadyforwar;fortheearthtrembledintheNorthlandswiththethunderoftheforgesofMorgothunderground.Longbefore,intheblissofValinor,beforeMelkorwasunchained,orliescamebetweenthem,FingonhadbeencloseinfriendshipwithMaedhros;andthoughheknewnotyetthatMaedhroshadnotforgottenhimattheburningoftheships,thethoughtoftheirancientfriendshipstunghisheart.ThereforehedaredadeedwhichisJustlyrenownedamongthefeatsoftheprincesoftheNoldor:alone,andwithoutthecounselofany,hesetforthmsearchofMaedhros;andaidedbytheverydarknessthatMorgothhadmadehecameunseenintothefastnessofhisfoes.HighupontheshouldersofThangorodrimheclimbed,andlookedindespairuponthedesolationoftheland;butnopassageorcrevicecouldhefindthroughwhichhemightcomewithinMorgoth’sstronghold.ThenindefianceoftheOrcs,whocoweredstillinthedarkvaultsbeneaththeearth,hetookhisharpandsangasongofValinorthattheNoldormadeofold,beforestrifewasbornamongthesonsofFinwe;andhisvoiceranginthemournfulhollowsthathadneverheardbeforeaughtsavecriesoffearandwoe.
ThusFingonfoundwhathesought.Forsuddenlyabovehimfarandfainthissongwastakenup,andavoiceansweringcalledtohim.Maedhrositwasthatsangamidhistorment.
