NolovewasthereintheheartsofthosethatfollowedFingolfinfortheHouseofFeanor,fortheagonyofthosethatenduredthecrossingoftheIcehadbeengreat,andFingolfinheldthesonstheaccomplicesoftheirfather.Thentherewasperilofstrifebetweenthehosts;butgrievousasweretheirlossesupontheroad,thepeopleofFingolfinandofFinrodsonofFinarfinwerestillmorenumerousthanthefollowersofFeanor,andthesenowwithdrewbeforethem,andremovedtheirdwellingtothesouthernshore;andthelakelaybetweenthem.ManyofFeanor’speopleindeedrepentedoftheburningatLosgar,andwerefilledwithamazementatthevalourthathadbroughtthefriendswhomtheyhadabandonedovertheIceoftheNorth;andtheywouldhavewelcomedthem,buttheydarednot,forshame.
ThusbecauseofthecursethatlayuponthemtheNoldorachievednothing,whileMorgothhesitated,andthedreadoflightwasnewandstrongupontheOrcs.ButMorgotharosefromthought,andseeingthedivisionofhisfoeshelaughed.InthepitsofAngbandhecausedvastsmokesandvapourstobemade,andtheycameforthfromthereekingtopsoftheIronMountains,andafarofftheycouldbeseeninMithrim,stainingthebrightairsinthefirstmorningsoftheworld.Awindcameoutoftheeast,andborethemoverHithlum,darkeningthenewSun;andtheyfell,andcoiledaboutthefieldsandhollows,andlayuponthewatersofMithrim,drearandpoisonous.
