NowrumourcametothecampinHithlumofthemarchofFingolfinandthosethatfollowedhim,whohadcrossedtheGrindingIce;andalltheworldlaytheninwonderatthecomingoftheMoon.ButasthehostofFingolfinmarchedintoMithrimtheSunroseflamingintheWest;andFingolfinunfurledhisblueandsilverbanners,andblewhishorns,andflowerssprangbeneathhismarchingfeet,andtheagesofthestarswereended.AttheuprisingofthegreatlighttheservantsofMorgothfledintoAngband,andFingolfinpassedunopposedthroughthefastnessofDorDaedelothwhilehisfoeshidbeneaththeearth.ThentheElvessmoteuponthegatesofAngband,andthechallengeoftheirtrumpetsshookthetowersofThangorodrim;andMaedhrosheardthemamidhistormentandcriedaloud,buthisvoicewaslostintheechoesofthestone.
ButFingolfin,beingofothertemperthanFeanor,andwaryofthewilesofMorgoth,withdrewfromDorDaedelothandturnedbacktowardsMithrim,forhehadheardtidingsthatthereheshouldfindthesonsofFeanor,andhedesiredalsotohavetheshieldoftheMountainsofShadowwhilehispeoplerestedandgrewstrong;forhehadseenthestrengthofAngband,andthoughtnotthatitwouldfalltothesoundoftrumpetsonly.ThereforecomingatlengthtoHithlumhemadehisfirstcampanddwellingbythenorthernshoresofLakeMithrim.
